A lot of western marketers treat Weibo as Twitter equivalent in China but now it seems that Weibo is more like a combination of Twitter (hashtag and repost), Instagram (live streaming and MyStory), Snapchat (short video messaging with editing) and Facebook (targeted ad and posts directly in the timeline).

After enabling short video editing and posting, live streaming within the app and Instagram like ‘My-story’ feature on the top, Weibo has extended its traditional text and picture contents to videos very successfully.

For any brand wanting to have real-time interaction with fans, leveraging Chinese KOL and celebrity resources, and building external traffic to eCommerce shopfronts, Weibo is a channel they have to use.
